The role of light in minimal architecture

How natural light shapes spatial experience and defines architectural form.

Take the decoration away from a room and what is left is light: where it enters, how it moves across the day, what it lands on. Minimal architecture is often described as an absence, but the buildings that work are full of something, and that something is usually daylight handled with care.

In practice this means deciding the orientation before the plan, sizing openings for the sun rather than the elevation, and choosing surfaces for how they hold light at four in the afternoon. None of it shows in a rendering. All of it shows in a room.

We now draw a light study before a plan on every project. It is the cheapest drawing we make and the one clients remember.
